The history of the Greifenklau Brewery
The history of the beer of Bamberg is nearly as old as the city itself: For almost 1.000 years local brewers have been brewing and drinking beer with great pleasure. In almost no other city in the world has the centu- ries old tradition of brewing beer been kept as lively as in the Franconi- an Cathedral city.

One of the last ten breweries of Bamberg is the Greifenklau Brewery.

As historic records Officer Johann Groß from Schönbrunn purchased
the estate "ufm Kaulperg" in 1585.

The real history of the Brewery started at the beginning of the 18th century, when Franz Friedrich von Greifenklau bought the estate.
He built a restaurant and a brewery with a barn, a stable, a hall and a
court and a small garden at the rear of the property.

After his death in 1729 the estate became property of the Cathedral.
The Cathedral decided to sell the estate and to change the existing right to brew own beer into the right to pour it out only.

In 1731 Willibald Mayer, a brewer from Herzogenaurach, bought the Brewery. He requested permission to retain the right to brew beer "for granting the city even better beer and the prince even more money". This permission was granted.

After the death of Willibald Mayer, Johann Adam Schwarz the son of a brewer married Mayer’s widow and became owner of the restaurant. Subsequently Balthasar Dressel from Höfen bought the restaurant “Zum Greifenklau” for 2.450 Gulden (1762-1772).

Leonhard Schmitt took over the estate in December 1786.

After his death the Brewery was sold by auction and purchased by Johannes Müller from Gaustadt for 10.100 Gulden. In 1846 he left it to his son Ignaz.

He enlarged the rock cellar several times between 1854 and 1868.

His son Franz lead the Brewery till 1903. As there was no family successor, he sold the estate for 72.000 Marks to the brewer Andreas Bergbauer.

Till the forced sale of 1914 the Greifenklau Brewery was lead by the married couple Andreas and Anna Bergbauer.

Sigmund Brockard from Gleusdorf, the grandfather of the current brewer bought the Greifenklau for 38.000 Marks. As the condition of the Brewery was disastrous, the new owner brewed his beer at the Brewery Riegelhof till 1919. In 1919 the brewery was restored and operation commenced again for pouring out the pale strong beer in November.

When Sigmund Brockard died in March 1944, his wife Maria tooks over the business and passed it over to her son Sigmund in 1949. Under his management the first cooling- machines were purchased in 1955 and one
year later he commenced planning a new
stockhouse.

The first stock in the new Brewery was brewed in 1959.

In 1970 a cellar for storage and fermentation was built next to the Brewery.

In 1974 he built the Hotel Altenburgblick.

Since 1981 the Brewery at the Kaulberg is property of the 3rd generation.

As it is a custom of the family, the current owner Sigmund Brockard is called like his father and his grandfather and also his son Sigmund continues the tradition of naming
and brewing.

There is still a spacious rock cellar three floors under the beer garden.
